Trudeau and Biden

Leadnow

Asarial, I’m blown away.

In less than 24 hours, the Leadnow community has raised $7871 of our $12,274 goal for a mobile billboard calling on Prime Minister Trudeau to up his climate ambition during U.S. President Biden’s official visit this Friday. [1]

With yesterday’s IPCC report reaffirming that we need an aggressive wind-down of fossil fuels to secure a liveable planet, it’s clear that Trudeau’s climate plans fall far short of the mark. [2]

That’s why we’re planning to hire an unmissable mobile billboard that will circle Parliament Hill during Biden’s visit, calling on Trudeau to raise his climate ambition on par with the United States’ by passing a strong Emissions Cap.

We’re just $4,403 away from making our plan a reality. Will you chip in $2, $5 or $20 to deliver Trudeau a climate wake-up call in front of President Biden?

Dear Asarial,

Prime Minister Trudeau will be putting on a show this week, presenting his accomplishments on climate to U.S. President Biden. [1]

While the Trudeau government makes out to be a leader on climate, Canada is now lagging behind the United States on more counts than one. While Biden has passed the Inflation Reduction Act — the most monumental investment in green energy in US history [2] — the Trudeau government is dragging their feet on putting a simple cap on polluting emissions. [3]

It’s embarrassing — and Trudeau knows it.

So, Asarial, I want you to imagine this. Biden has just arrived in Ottawa, and when Prime Minister Trudeau emerges to greet him, something catches his attention out of the corner of his eye. It’s an unmissable mobile billboard circling Parliament, calling out his government’s failure on climate in bold neon writing. All of a sudden, he’s on the defensive — and anxious for something he can use to prove we’re on par with the U.S. in tackling the climate crisis.

We’re already in touch with a contractor who could make this mobile billboard a reality — but with only three days until Biden arrives in Ottawa, we have to raise $12,274, quickly. So, Asarial, can you chip in just $2, $5 or $20 to help us call Trudeau out for his climate inaction in front of President Biden?

For years, while president Donald Trump stripped back environmental protections, greenlit new coal projects and placed fossil fuel CEOs in key government positions, [4,5,6] Trudeau marketed Canada as a progressive, climate-defending bastion. [7]

Trudeau’s climate record may win out over Trump’s — but with Trump out of the White House, the Trudeau government can no longer get away with claiming to be climate leaders. [8] Not being a villain isn’t the same as being a hero.

Right now, the Trudeau government is writing legislation for their promised Emissions Cap — a policy that, if done well, could limit polluting emissions from the fossil fuel industry and put Canada on track to meeting its climate targets. [9] But Big Oil has been lobbying hard for them to water the policy down — and to that end, they’ve been meeting with elected representatives as often as five times a day. [10]

If Trudeau wants to fashion himself as a climate leader on the international stage, he’ll have to put in real work. And he can start by passing a strong Emissions Cap.

Biden’s visit is our chance to remind Trudeau that he has a shot at living up to his “climate leader” moniker, if he legislates a bold and ambitious cap on polluting emissions. Asarial, will you donate just $2, $5 or $20 to deliver Trudeau a wake-up call on climate in front of President Biden?
