Asarial, it’s official. The federal and provincial governments are coming together tomorrow for talks about how to better support our deteriorating healthcare system. [1]
This is a big deal. Instead of passing the buck, politicians are actually coming together — in part thanks to mounting public pressure surrounding the healthcare crises people across the country are facing. [2] The outcome of these talks could be a deal that makes our public healthcare systems more robust — addressing crises like astronomical wait times and staffing shortages. But it could easily go in a different direction. Many provinces’ current healthcare plans involve the expansion of private clinics, potentially paving the way for a two-tier healthcare system. [3-5] As Trudeau and Health Minister Duclos go into these meetings, we need to make sure they don’t just write a blank cheque to provinces but attach conditions that will protect public healthcare. If we flood their inboxes with thousands of messages right now we could help convince them to negotiate so the deal doesn’t allow any public money to be funnelled into private, for-profit healthcare, but instead builds thriving and resilient healthcare systems. Will you send a message to Prime Minister Trudeau and Health Minister Duclos now to protect public healthcare? They’re meeting with Premiers tomorrow so we have to act now.
We’ve drafted a message for you to use, but feel free to use local examples if you can or talk about why this issue is so important to you. If you’re without a family doctor, or have a personal story about the importance of public healthcare, consider talking about your experience — it could go a long way. Ontario and Alberta have already moved forward with their privatization plans. They’ve outsourced surgeries to for-profit clinics by diverting money meant for public healthcare. [6,7] And provinces in the Atlantic region are following suit. [8] But it’s a band-aid: by funnelling public money towards private providers, they’re starving the public system of vital resources. The federal government is already wielding their negotiating power in these deals — by attaching demands to address surgery backlogs, the lack of primary care doctors and mental health care. [9] If they hear from tens of thousands of us before they meet with the Premiers, it could help convince them to attach conditions that will also protect public healthcare. Will you send a message now?
