Fined for leaving old growth standing

Leadnow

Dear Asarial, I can’t believe this is really happening.

Here’s the situation: BC logging firm Downie Timber in Revelstoke wants to stop logging sections of at-risk old growth — but the Crown Corporation that manages BC’s forests just told them to cut the trees down, or pay a massive fee to leave them standing. [1]

The BC NDP was elected on a promise to protect these ancient trees — but now, they’re penalizing a company for trying to do the very same thing. [2]

For Downie Timber, leaving old growth standing is a way to honour their relationships with local First Nations and to protect the critical habitat of one of the province’s sole recovering caribou herds. They’re doing everything the BC government should be doing — but instead of being celebrated for their leadership, they’re being punished. [3]

The BC NDP has shown us they don’t care about protecting old growth — so it’s our job to show them that they’ll have their own political price to pay for their broken promises. Asarial, will you add your name to the petition calling on BC Premier David Eby and Minister of Forests Doug Donaldson to stop punishing companies for leaving old growth standing?

Asarial, Razing old-growth forests — fire-resistant carbon sinks — to the ground is throwing fuel on the worsening climate crisis, and making wildfires more deadly. [4]

This is why protecting BC’s remaining old-growth is about more than just preserving these precious forests for their inherent value — they’re one of our best and last defenses against impending climate disasters. [5]

In 2021, the BC government launched a deferral process to preserve at-risk old growth while developing a new approach to sustainable forest management. It was a good first step — but cut blocks like Downie’s, which were purchased before the start of the deferrals process, are slipping through the cracks. [6] That also means old growth logging continues in BC without Indigenous consent. [7]

Ancient trees still face an existential threat from logging in BC — and for as long as the BC NDP fails to deliver on its promise to protect old growth forests, it will fail to deliver on the demands of climate action and reconciliation.

This is our chance to build a loud chorus of voices who will speak up for old growth, and hold the BC NDP accountable to their promise. Asarial, will you sign the petition calling on BC Premier David Eby and Minister of Forests Doug Donaldson to stop forcing timber companies to cut down precious old growth?
