Asarial, it’s possible you haven’t heard from us in a while. We’ve been keeping an eye on the Canada Disability Benefit and moments to show up for the disability community. That moment is now.
Friend, As our cost of living crisis hits vulnerable communities hardest, our government is threatening the wellbeing of people with disabilities with their inaction. After passing the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) into law earlier this year, we’re now hearing from allied groups that the CDB won’t be funded until 2025. This will mean another year without life saving support for the disability community. This is unacceptable. Though the Canada Disability Benefit was promised by Justin Trudeau over 3 years ago, and passed unanimously in the House of Commons in June, the government has made no moves to honour its commitment to fund the bill with the urgency needed to address the disability poverty crisis. [1,2] Asarial, this is our chance to force their hand. We now have a narrow window as the government makes crucial funding decisions. Kamal Khera – the newly appointed Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities – and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will be deciding the fate of the CDB soon. We need to showcase a groundswell of public support for funding the CDB with urgency – so the CDB doesn’t get caught behind red tape again. Will you sign our petition now calling on Chrystia Freeland and Kamal Khera to fund the Canada Disability Benefit now?
Although disability poverty affects a huge portion of the population – with one in five Canadians, or 6.2 million people, living day to day with a physical, developmental or psychiatric disability, and forty per cent of Canadians living in poverty having a disability – the disability poverty crisis is largely invisible to those not affected by it. [3] Despite strong recommendations from the Senate and disability rights groups, the federal government seems to be ignoring the urgency of the disability poverty crisis, and pushing back the timeline on putting money in the hands of the people who need it most. [4] We cannot allow this crisis to remain invisible. We need our leaders to act with urgency to support those who need it most to live with dignity. Will you sign the petition and call for funding for the Canada Disability Benefit now?
