Big Oil’s Fair Share

Leadnow

Asarial,

“The climate time bomb is ticking.”

That was UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ warning yesterday, as the latest IPCC report by the world’s top climate scientists dropped. It is crystal clear: we must act now, before climate change wreaks irrevocable damage on our communities. [1,2]

Big Oil is what got us into this situation. And they’re also holding us back from doing anything about it. The oil and gas industry knew the truth that their polluting emissions drive climate change, and they lied and hid it from us. [3]

They’re hellbent on exploiting the earth for profit, and not only that—they’re nickel and diming us at the gas pump, making record profits off the backs of everyday people. [4] But it’s time to make them pay.

Right now, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is putting the finishing touches on her Federal Budget. [5] With the latest IPCC report high in the news, the spotlight is on her to make this budget the one that finally makes Big Oil pay. If we can flood Minister Freeland’s inbox calling for a windfall tax on Big Oil’s profits in budget 2023, we can help pressure her to make exactly that happen. Will you send a message now?

It might sound like a big ask, but we know it’s possible. The Conservative government in the UK implemented a windfall tax on energy company’s excess profits just last year —it’s projected to raise more than $8 billion CAD in one year. [6]

If implemented, a windfall tax on Big Oil would be a game-changer. It could help ensure we spend what it takes, and make transformational investments for a more sustainable and prosperous future for all of us. [7] So we can build sustainable energy systems, expand accessible public transportation across the country, and ensure a good-paying, stable job for everyone who wants one.

That future is possible—and our government can take the first step towards it, by announcing a windfall tax on Big Oil. Will you email Minister Freeland now?

In solidarity,
Ellen and Maggie for Leadnow
