Asarial, there’s not a minute to lose. Later today, a basic, guaranteed liveable income will come to the Senate floor. If the skyrocketing inflation of the last two years has shown us anything, it’s that our society doesn’t provide for everyone. Canada’s wealth has soared exponentially – even as we’ve let inequality grow. [1] But everyone deserves to live a decent life – to put food on the table and have a safe place to call home. That’s what a guaranteed, livable basic income – a regular, no-strings payment to everyone in Canada who needs it – could help provide. And create jobs and grow our economy at the same time. [2] And with basic income now up for consideration in the Senate, this is our chance to help realize our shared vision of a future where everyone has enough. But to have impact, we need to make our message impossible to ignore. Asarial, will you add your name to the petition calling for a basic, guaranteed liveable income?
Asarial, maintaining the status quo is incredibly expensive. Poverty costs the government a staggering $72-86 billion every year. And with the cost of living spiraling out of control while billionaires hoard their ever-increasing profits, the gaps in our social safety net are widening. [3,4] A basic income would help close the gaps by radically simplifying access to income support. It’d provide everyone in Canada who needs it with a regular payment, regardless of work status. It would help make our economy more resilient, so that if businesses are forced to close, workers can still feed their families and pay their bills during difficult times. We know basic income works. A basic income trial in Manitoba had positive physical and mental health benefits — and high school graduation rates improved, too. A 2017 Ontario pilot helped people buy food, participate in training, and pay their bills. And recent research shows that basic income could lift millions of people out of poverty, while boosting the economy by $80 billion a year. [5-7] A basic income would lift us all up. So, Asarial — if you believe that everyone should be able to meet their basic needs and live a dignified life, will you sign the petition in support of basic income?
