In the last few weeks, Guelph city council passed a motion calling for the creation of a national basic income. [1] Support is growing for a guaranteed livable income that would provide much-needed support to people across Canada. At the federal level, the Senate Finance Committee took the first step toward a guaranteed livable basic income last week. Senators started studying Bill S-233, which would develop a framework for a regular, no-strings payment to everyone in Canada who needs it. [2] Those of us who have been struggling with the day-to-day impacts of the rising cost of living can easily see how important a basic income is to build a fairer future where everyone has what they need to live a decent life. But for this legislation to pass, we need to show decision-makers just how widespread support is – and how urgently we need this bill. The Senate isn’t used to public scrutiny, so getting thousands of messages in support of Bill S-233 could make a big difference and help convince them to pass the bill quickly. If we can show that this is a policy that Canadians are ready to fight for, it will make basic income a priority and give it the best possible chance to become law. Will you send a message to Senators on the Finance Committee, calling on them to support a guaranteed livable basic income?
We’ve drafted a message for you to use, but feel free to share your own experiences or talk about why this issue is important to you. Personal messages and stories go a long way. The cost-of-living crisis is making life unaffordable for many of us across the country – and it’s time for the government to address the root causes, rather than the symptoms, of systemic poverty. We need our government to step up and protect everyday people from the worst impacts of inflation and economic downturn. Grocery store chains and oil and gas companies are all seeing record profits — but these profits are only lining the pockets of top executives. Meanwhile, more people than ever are relying on food banks in Canada. [3] Coupled with a strong social safety net, a guaranteed livable income would lift us all up. Recent research shows that basic income could lift millions of people out of poverty, while boosting the economy by $80 billion a year. [4-6] The bill that’s currently being considered by the Senate is a crucial step towards making basic income a reality. [7] If you believe that everyone should be able to meet their basic needs and live a dignified life, will you take action for a guaranteed livable basic income by writing to key Senators today?
