Asarial, There’s been nothing but red tape for the disability community since the federal government finally passed the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB). From deeply unreasonable eligibility requirements to a measly maximum of just $6 a day – the government’s current proposals for the CDB fall short of their promise to lift millions out of poverty. But Asarial, we have a chance to change that. The federal government has opened public consultations on how the CDB should work. This is a crucial opportunity for us to have a say. Our friends at Disability Without Poverty and other allies have key recommendations that could strengthen the CDB and give people with disabilities the support they need to live with dignity. If thousands of us flood the consultation echoing their demands to make the CDB well-funded and accessible, we could help tip the scales. Will you send a message now demanding the federal government strengthen the Canada Disability Benefit?
The CDB should be a transformative benefit for people — and it still can be. Asarial, right now, over 1.5 million people are living in disability poverty, but less than 600,000 are even eligible for the CDB as it is outlined now. Disability poverty can affect every aspect of people’s lives: mental health, housing, and access to food and essential care. But right now, the CDB is only promising a mere $200 a month – well below the monthly cost of a one-bedroom in cities like Vancouver. It’s unacceptable. We know so many in the Leadnow community have been affected by disability poverty, whether you yourself are currently living with a disability or know someone close who is affected. Will you take a few minutes now to send a message and demand that the CDB be the life-saving support it should be?
