BREAKING: the Jasper wildfire

Leadnow

Asarial, it’s straight out of a nightmare.

Overnight, a wildfire raged into the town of Jasper, incinerating the historic townsite and reducing hundreds of homes to charred rubble.

As of this morning, over 25,000 residents and tourists have been forced to flee the area. And small communities all across B.C. and Alberta have opened up their homes to receive those displaced — turning community centers, hotels, and churches into emergency shelters.

It’s a testament to the understanding we all share — that in moments of crisis, we take care of one another. And it’s why I was filled with outrage when I learned that – instead of focusing all efforts on critical pieces of community infrastructure – firefighters have been re-directed to save the Trans Mountain pipeline.

Research has shown that the fossil fuel industry is directly responsible for worsening forest fires in Canada. That means that when communities like Jasper are forced to rebuild in the wake of wildfire, they’re footing the bill for Big Oil’s mess. This news that publicly-funded firefighters are protecting an oil pipeline — while thousands of people lose their homes — is just the final straw.

Asarial, will you sign our petition calling on the federal government to implement an excess profits tax on the fossil fuel industry, and stop allowing them to profit while our communities burn?

I’LL SIGN THE PETITION TO MAKE BIG OIL PAY

As the climate crisis worsens, the price tag keeps getting higher.

It costs the public billions every year to prevent, manage, and rebuild from devastating wildfires, an amount that the fossil fuel industry – which took home $25 billion in profits last year – should be on the hook for.

And wildfires aren’t the only concern. Last week’s flooding in Toronto – due to record rainfall – is expected to result in $1 billion worth of damages — and this summer’s droughts, heatwaves, and monsoons are all adding to the bill.

The evidence is clear: we can’t afford the fossil fuel industry. And with the costs of the climate crisis mounting, now is the moment to call on our government to implement an excess profits tax on Big Oil’s ill-gotten gains. Asarial, will you sign the petition now?

P.S. If you’d like to support people fleeing from and rebuilding in the wake of wildfires, the Canadian Red Cross is accepting donations here.
