CDB in 2024 Budget

Leadnow

Asarial, I just got political intel that people with disabilities living in poverty will likely have to wait more than 18 months to receive the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) – after having already waited 4 years for life saving support. [1]

Since the Liberal government promised the CDB in 2020, the already dire disability poverty crisis has only gotten more severe. Now, amid a cost of living and housing crisis – our government is telling them they must wait longer. [2,3] This is unacceptable.

But they are giving us an opportunity to force their hand. The 2024 budget is being written behind closed doors right now and we have 2 days left to influence their first draft. The federal government is closing public, pre-budget consultations soon – this is our chance to stand with the disability community and demand urgent funding for the CDB.

If thousands of us flood the federal government consultation process with messages, we can show that funding the CDB in 2024 is a top priority for Canadians. Will you send a message now asking the federal government to fund the Canada Disability Benefit in the 2024 Budget?

Poverty rates are rising across Canada, exacerbating existing poverty among the disability community – meaning people with disabilities are finding it harder than ever to meet their most basic needs. [4]

In some cases, people in poverty who see no adequate federal support in sight to live with dignity are seeking medically-assisted dying. [5] It’s an impossible choice that no one should have to make.

People with disabilities in poverty deserve help now, not in 18 months.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Minister for Persons with Disabilities Kamal Khera clearly do not see urgency around funding the CDB – so we need to force their hand. Will you send a message now asking the federal government to fund the CDB in the 2024 Budget?
