| Asarial — since I saw the news, I haven’t been able to shake the awful pit in my stomach.
This past weekend, the Conservative party passed two motions at their convention attacking the rights of the queer and trans community. [1] The first motion would prevent trans youth from accessing gender-affirming care — and the second would prevent trans women from accessing key public services. [2] Both are straight out of the Trumpian playbook — and, if championed by the Conservative party, would threaten the basic rights and safety of queer and trans people. Right now, a small but well-organized far-right faction wants to turn the Conservative party into a vehicle for their hate. So far, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has been sticking to the sidelines of their fear-mongering, hoping to play both sides for political gain. [3] His ambivalence is our opportunity. Party leaders don’t have any obligation to implement policies passed by members at convention — so if we can show Poilievre that the Conservatives will pay a political price for attacking the basic rights and dignity of queer and trans people, it could force him to stand up to these bigoted outliers.
The Conservative party’s hateful agenda doesn’t stop with queer and trans people. Alongside motions to restrict gender-affirming care and ban trans women from public spaces, a vast majority of convention members also voted this past weekend to repeal affirmative action, ban diversity training, and outlaw vaccine mandates. [4] Put together, these policies would threaten the safety of our queer and trans community members, and make workplaces less diverse and less safe for racialized employees. It’s an agenda that serves no one but bigots – and it could make life much harder for those who already have the deck stacked against them. That’s why, for months, the Leadnow community has been organizing to challenge the Conservatives’ hateful vision for Canada — and to fight for the real solutions our communities deserve. Asarial, it’ll take all of us — standing up as one — to defend the rights and dignity of our queer and trans community.
