Asarial, Metro grocery store workers in Ontario are on strike this week, for a sobering reason: they can’t afford the groceries they sell. [1] Food prices are up across Canada – and it’s hitting everyone hard. [2] Some food banks are serving triple the number of people they did pre-pandemic – and for the first time, many are people with jobs who simply can’t keep up with the cost of living. [3] And all the while, Canada’s grocery conglomerates are raking in record profits. [4,5] Asarial, it’s clear that the market isn’t working for Canadians. But one simple measure could go a long way to make life liveable for all of us: a price freeze on essential groceries like bread, milk, and baby formula. It could give Canadians the break they badly need. But Asarial, Prime Minister Trudeau won’t consider it unless he sees that thousands of Canadians are well and truly fed up with rising food prices. Will you sign the petition calling for a federal price freeze on essential groceries now?
Price freezes on essential groceries aren’t a new idea. Earlier this year, Loblaws locked in the prices of more than 1,500 grocery items on its in-house No Name line. It was a goodwill gesture designed to deflect attention from the company’s profiteering schemes – but it was short-lived, and didn’t extend to the rest of the grocery giants. [6] It’s clear that the government knows they need to take action: MPs unanimously passed a motion calling for tackling corporate greed last year, showing us that there’s appetite for change across partisan lines. [7] And Trudeau’s government has already taken baby steps in the right direction: in July, they issued a Grocery Rebate as a form of targeted relief for consumers. [8] But until grocery giants are forced to heel, prices will just keep rising. If Trudeau were to impose a price freeze on essential groceries, it could ensure every Canadian could afford to put food on the table. With grocery worker strikes underway, the cost-of-living crisis plastered across every front page in the country, and political opponents clamoring for action, Trudeau is already under enormous pressure to ease the burden on everyday Canadians. A massive petition now could help force Trudeau’s hand to issue a price freeze on essential groceries. So, Asarial, will you add your name?
