Canada’s climate report card

Leadnow

Asarial,

The federal government has just submitted their annual climate emissions report card to the UN — and we don’t want this one up on the fridge. Our emissions have gone up — though they’re below pre-pandemic levels — and there’s one main culprit driving the increase: the oil and gas industry. [1]

Climate action is a team effort. But the oil and gas industry isn’t pulling its weight. In fact, they’re polluting more, canceling out the progress being made by other sectors. [2] By doing so, they’re blocking progress to a climate-safe future for all of us.

The good news? The government’s working on a policy to cap oil and gas emissions, and it’s coming soon. Leadnow supporters like you have been fighting tooth and nail to ensure it finally makes big oil do their fair share. But with only months left until the policy is dropped, and oil and gas lobby going hard to water it down, we’ll need to ramp up the pressure, quickly.

So here’s the plan. We’re going to set up recurring phone parties — to make sure key politicians will hear our calls, again and again, for a bold emissions cap. And we’re going to cap it off with a massive national day of action, to make a splash at MP offices across the country.

How big we go will depend on the funds in our arsenal. To launch the next phase of the campaign, we’ll need to raise $12,475. While we don’t have the deep pockets of big oil, we do have a community of hundreds of thousands of people fighting for a better future. If every person reading this email donated just $5, we’d raise the funds to make our plans happen in no time.

So, will you chip in now to help us go up against big oil in the fight for a strong emissions cap? Time is running out, any amount goes a long way.

Bold action to create a fairer, climate-safe world for all of us is possible. Friday’s report also showed that the electricity sector reduced its emissions by 56% from 2005 levels. [3] It’s with strong political will from the federal government, and public pressure on the industry that big things become possible.

If the emissions cap ensures that corporations are held accountable, has no loopholes and is grounded in the Paris Agreement’s goal of holding global warming to 1.5 C, Canada will be on track to doing our fair share of climate action. At this time in history, there is no other option.

National days of action work. Just weeks ago, Leadnow joined Wet’suwet’en Land Defenders and allies to take on RBC with a massive national Day of Action across Canada. The day made headlines across the country. Days later during RBC’s AGM, shareholders voted in huge numbers for resolutions backing Indigenous rights and bolder climate action.

The strategy worked: RBC was on the backfoot. [4] And that’s exactly what we want to do here — get bigger and louder to take on the oil and gas industry. Will you chip in $5, $10, or $20 to make it happen?

Over the past eight months, we’ve come together to fight for a bold emissions cap that finally ensures big oil does its fair share. We submitted thousands of comments to the government’s emissions cap consultation. With allies, we delivered our petition to an international global summit. And we’ve ramped up the pressure on MPs — hosting dozens of meetings in our ridings and taking our message to Cabinet Ministers and on the streets.

None of this would be possible without you — thank you. If you’re able, please make a small donation so we can keep fighting together.
