Asarial,
RBC held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last Wednesday. They hoped this would be a chance to show off their accomplishments. Instead, RBC executives were put on the defensive — as the AGM shed a light on their toxic investments in fossil fuels and their terrible record on Indigenous rights. [1,2] A delegation including Wet’suwet’en leaders, elders and youth, along with Gulf South representatives went to the AGM and shared moving testimony of the consequences of RBC bankrolling toxic projects like the Coastal GasLink pipeline. [3] Asarial, RBC was already on the back foot before our allies even showed up. They moved this year’s AGM to Saskatoon, trying to hide from our pressure. And when they realized they couldn’t run away, they resorted to shutting out the land defenders, barring them from the main meeting room. [4] Nevertheless, with hundreds of people rallying in support outside the AGM, the message was loud and clear: RBC must stop funding climate chaos and start respecting Indigenous rights. National and local media coverage of RBC’s AGM emphasized the pressure from land defenders and climate activists, flagging that concerns about Coastal GasLink and fossil fuel financing “dominated” the AGM. [5-7] Inside the meeting, we saw growing support for shareholder resolutions on climate change and Indigenous rights. 22% voted to make RBC’s climate plan bolder with absolute emissions targets. Nearly one in three shareholders supported a resolution for Indigenous Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. [8] These are record-high levels of support for such proposals at any major Canadian bank – showing that our message is reaching RBC investors. That’s because, led by Indigenous communities and together with thousands of allies and supporters, our movement calling out RBC’s role in climate destruction is getting louder than ever. Here’s a snapshot of what the Leadnow community did leading up to the 2023 AGM to ramp up the pressure on RBC:
This year, RBC was in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons – and we were only able to make that happen by working together. But we’re not done yet. If you’re able, please consider making a small donation so we can continue to hold RBC accountable for funding climate destruction:
