Re. Big Oil’s annual symposium

Dear Asarial,

Next week, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers — a club for the worst polluters in Canada — will be hosting their annual convention in Toronto. [1]

For two days, the very wealthiest oil barons and investors will gather to discuss their plans to expand the fossil fuel industry and boost their bottom line — all while strategizing to stop the federal government from passing an ambitious Emissions Cap that would limit their profiteering. [2]

It’s our job to reveal the truth: that Big Oil is destroying the planet at our expense — and doing everything in their power to prevent real climate action.

So, Asarial, here’s the plan: just last week we hired a mobile billboard van to call on Trudeau to pass a bold Emissions Cap — and if we raise $12,130 we can send it out again, this time to the hotel where the CAPP conference is being held.

Just imagine a massive mobile billboard roaming the busy Toronto streets around the CAPP conference calling out top fossil fuel CEOs in Canada for their climate crimes. It would let them know their “good guy” jig is up, and put them on the defensive.

Will you chip in just $10 by Friday to help us expose Big Oil’s propaganda for what it is, and to fight for the solutions we really need – like a hard cap on polluting emissions?

Asarial, last week, thanks to Leadnow supporters, we sent a mobile billboard van to the streets of Ottawa calling out Trudeau’s climate record during Biden’s visit. And its tactics like this that turn up the heat. While the federal government has the power to set us down a path of climate justice — it’s the people sitting at CAPP that are standing in the way.

For years, the Canadian fossil fuel industry has pushed the narrative that Canadian oil is “cleaner” and “more ethical” than that produced in other parts of the world – a xenophobic rhetoric built on the idea that other oil-producing countries don’t respect human rights, while Canada does. [3,4]

It’s a distraction from the truth – which is that Canada’s tar sands are fuelling the climate crisis and trampling all over Indigenous rights. [5]

And now, as public support is growing for a transition to a greener, fairer economy — and the government is looking at ways to ensure Big Oil’s emissions are kept in check — the industry is on the defensive, spinning tales that they’re taking action to keep their emissions down, even as they continue to poison the planet. [6]
