Asarial, a new report predicts that food prices will increase by another 5%-7% in 2023. [1] Ordinary people are already suffering from the cost of living crisis — more choppy waters will be devastating for millions across the country. [2] Yet on Bay St, Canada’s wealthiest corporations are riding the gravy train. [3,4] Grocery giants are seeing soaring profits — like Loblaws who saw excess profits amounting to $1 million a day. [5] Oil and gas companies are raking it in like never before. [6] And the financial sector is insulated from the crisis, while hard-working families bear the brunt of inflation. [7] Infuriatingly, our political leaders have failed to do anything substantive about it. But more people are catching on. Just weeks ago, Leadnow members participated in our cost of living survey, and a huge majority of us wanted to take the fight right to the source: corporate greed. So we’re cooking up a plan to do just that. In 2023, we’re going to ramp up the pressure on the corporations who are riding high — call out their record profits, flood their AGMs, and damage their brand. We’re going to go after the political leaders that are letting it happen — jam up their inboxes and phones, and demand they take action to rein corporate excess in. And we’re going to make a splash in the media — to highlight the truth of corporate greed. This plan is needed more than ever. But in a world dominated by money, it takes money to fight. We don’t have the money these corporations do, but if we all chip in $5, $10, $15, we can create something bold. If you can, will you chip in now so Leadnow can fight the corporate greed that is causing the cost of living crisis in 2023? The more we raise, the bigger our campaigns can be!
Asarial, we’re all feeling the pinch of the cost of living crisis. [9,10] And you, and all Leadnow members, have shown up to campaign tirelessly. As much as possible, we try to avoid asking for money for cost-of-living campaigns. But we know we need the plan to get us out of this mess, and the only way we can keep up this fight is if those of us who can, chip in to help. If you’re struggling, please don’t feel any pressure to donate. The impact you’re having by signing petitions, writing to your politicians and lobbying people in power is immense. But we’ve heard from many people who take part in Leadnow campaigns not out of concern for themselves, but out of concern for others. Compassionate people who’ve told us they’re doing okay but want to ensure everyone else is okay too. If that sounds like you, any donation you can afford would help.
This year, Leadnow went in hard. We launched campaigns targeting Loblaw’s for their profiteering. We ramped up the pressure for a tax on the wealthiest Canadians and called for a windfall tax on excess profits. We took our demands to the streets, the halls of power, the airwaves and social media. And this chorus of pressure is having an impact. More and more people are seeing corporate greed as a problem. [11] Even the opposition has begun to call for similar measures, like the windfall tax. [12] In 2023, we can’t step back: we need to build the momentum and scale up. Asarial, we don’t know exactly what’s in store for us in 2023. But Leadnow is a big community that believes in working together to build a fairer country for all. It’s what has made us so strong for so many years. If we’re going to push back against the corporate greed that is exacerbating the cost of living crisis — we are going to do it together. If you can, chip in now.
