Urgent: COP 27

Leadnow

URGENT: Asarial, we’ve just heard from our allies at COP 27 — the UN Climate Summit — that Canada is refusing to join the calls of India, the United States, and the European Union to include “fossil fuel phase-out” in the agreement’s final text. [1]

It’s never been up for debate — averting climate catastrophe means winding down the production and burning of all fossil fuels, full stop. [2]

If our government was a real climate leader, it would be leading the charge toward a fossil-free world. But instead, our federal leaders are going to bat for Big Oil and holding the world back from the ambitious climate action we need to secure a liveable planet. It’s infuriating.

COP 27 wraps tomorrow — and with talks coming down to the wire, we have precious little time to ensure Canada doesn’t block climate progress. A big public outcry calling out our government’s failure to live up to its supposed climate ambitions could help ensure their actions align with their words at COP 27.

Asarial, will you send an urgent Tweet to Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault calling on him to be brave and commit to phasing out ALL fossil fuels? It will take less than a minute, and we have a template you can use!

At COP 27, the international community’s facade of climate leadership has finally begun to crack. Key world leaders — including the presidents of China and India, and our own Prime Minister Justin Trudeau — have opted not to attend. [3] Fossil fuel delegates outnumber representatives from nations on the frontlines of the climate crisis. And the ambition of the negotiations keeps dropping.

But the need for ambition has never been greater. A recent UN report showed that rich nations like Canada are falling “painfully short” of our climate commitments — and that as a result, the world is on track to pass 1.5 degrees of warming in the next decade. [4]

Asarial, I know it can sometimes feel hard to believe it, but we still have time to change course — and every fraction of a degree of warming that we can avert means a less catastrophic outlook for our communities and the world. [5] We owe it to ourselves, the world, and future generations to try.

That’s why Steven Guilbeault needs to hear from us. If Canada wants to be a climate leader, it needs to up its ambition fast — by cutting its ties with Big Oil and making a plan to wean Canada off fossil fuels at the speed and scale the crisis requires.

If you can, will you send a tweet right now calling on Minister of Environment Steven Guilbeault to hold true to our Paris commitments and commit to a fossil fuel phase-out?

In hope and anger,
Kate and Simran for Leadnow
